Montgomery County Picnic
Montgomery County Picnic - Thursday August 26, 2010
Over 100 people from Independence, Cherryvale, Thayer, Parsons, Columbus and rural Montgomery County gathered at Riverside Park in Independence for the annual SKIL community picnic. As people from the area started gathering in the rock shelter house the smell of fresh cooked, hickory smoked burgers and hot dogs had everyone in a great mood for the cool evening.
Everyone pitched in together and shared in a great meal and then Ricky and Henry were in charge of the tickets for the drawings. Atmos Energy Corporation, Caldwell Banker Pasternak-Johnson and Misch Office Supply were supporters that helped to make the night possible. Door prizes like ice cream comes from Dairy Queen and pizza from Big Cheese, tire rotation from Ashcraft, and dinner at Bella Vista were certainly appreciated.
But one of the most enjoyable times of the evening was Ricky leading the group in John Denver's song Take Me Home Country Roads. There were several cowboys in the group when Ghost Riders in the Sky started. All and all it was a great family style event and everyone parted to their own homes.
Sandra Klingensmith one of the SKIL Board members was present and took several photos also. I will share those as soon as they as available.
Advocates make homemade tornados
10 ladies attended the advocacy group on August 18th at the Yates Center SKIL office. Everyone enjoyed potluck lunch of cheese and crackers, brownies, macaroni salad, corn, strawberry and banana surprise, cinnamon rolls, fruit salad, and more. Each person was given a weather safety booklet and a pepper or tomato plant. The door prize winners were Donna, Betty, Pat, Linda and Jane! Congratulations ladies. The prizes won were a hanging strawberry plant. Two were a box of wildflower seeds. A herb grow kit was also given away. Thank you to the Yates Center Dollar General for donating their out of season items to SKIL for door prizes.
Since we were studying bad weather; we made homemade tornados in two liter bottles with glitter for fun effects! Then we made Red Neck Wind Chimes. These were made from sticks, fishing line, string, and different sized bolts, nuts, screws, nails, etc. They turned out really awesome and the chimes were all a little different. Watch for the next invitation to our group and please join us. We have a lot of fun projects, great peer support, community involvement, and total confidentiality.
Come Advocate for yourselves and be a True You..Uniquely Me “Feminine Mystique” Advocacy member!! We have a membership card waiting for you. Read full newsletter from Woodson County and see what's cooking. Click Here
